I have been searching for free yet well-built todo apps for macOS for the past few weeks, primarily to manage my tasks and to-dos. Surely, there’s the macOS Reminders app, which covers everything I need, but I still wanted to try other options available out there.
And here are three macOS apps I have been trying and have liked so far. And I think you will like them too!
Check Check Check
Check Check Check is a simple and elegant todo app that lives in your menubar always ready for you to add your todos/tasks. Nothing fancy!
You can set reminders for your tasks. You can also pin your most important tasks to the top of the list which is pretty handy in my opinion. And that’s about it. It’s a simple app that does the job.
CmdList
If you’ve ever wanted a todo app that you can invoke and maneuver all using keyboard shortcuts then CmdList is the app for you. In other words, it’s keyboard-driven todo app. And it’s quite unique just because of this aspect.
So, to invoke CmdList, you just need to press Cmd + L (Or whatever keyboard shortcut you set in the app’s preferences). In my case, I have set Control + L as the keyboard shortcut. Once invoked, the app floats on top of your apps, ready for you to add your todos/tasks. You can do that by pressing A, adding your task, and then pressing Enter or Return to save it.
As you can tell, you can navigate through your tasks using the up and down arrow keys. You can also mark a task as done by pressing Enter or Return. You can also delete a task by pressing Backspace or Del.
You don’t need to touch your mouse or touchpad ever at least for your todos. This is by far my favorite app in this list without any doubt.
Reminders MenuBar
Lastly, if you’re a fan of Reminders app and always wanted to put it in the menubar, Reminders MenuBar is the app for you. It’s a menubar app that lets you create and manage your tasks in a familiar Reminders app interface in the menubar.
The app syncs your todos/tasks with your Reminders app back and forth. Meaning, that if you add a task in the Reminders app, it will be added in the app and vice versa. And it’s a great way to have quick access to your todos/tasks in menubar.
The app is also open-source. So, that’s certainly a bonus in my opinion.
