The problem with most timer apps you see today is that they feel too daunting to set countdown timers. You would be presented with a lot of pre-defined controls to set the time upfront. And that might feel overwhelming since all you want is to set an innocent countdown timer!
Enter Tock. A minimal, free, and open-source timer app I recently found that lets you set countdown timers in natural language, which is something I really admire.
For starters, if you want to set a 1-minute timer, you open up Tock in the menubar and quite literally type “1 min”, hit return, and boom! Your 1-minute timer has started. It’s really that simple!
You can even specify the time in AM/PM or 24h format, and it will set the timer relative to the specified time. So, for instance, if you want a timer that you want to go off at 9 PM and the current time is 8:37, you can type “9pm” (or “9p” if you’re super lazy, like me) and it will start the timer for 23 minutes.
You can also start the stopwatch by just clicking on the play button.
On the face, the app is pretty minimal, but it comes with a bunch of customizations as well, such as setting the notification tone, play tone, and volume of the notification.
All in all, I’m enjoying Tock so far, and in fact, I have started using timers more for various use-cases, all thanks to Tock’s simplicity and ease of use.
