Monocle

An app that removes distractions by blurring everything but your active window

Monocle

In a world filled with endless notifications, cluttered screens, and background distractions, staying focused can feel like a battle and get lost in the noise. If you can find a way to reduce the amount of distractions, it can make your work and life much more enjoyable. For instance, when you’re working with a lot of applications, it’s hard to keep track of all the open windows.

This is where an app called Monocle that I recently stumbled upon comes in handy. Monocle removes distractions by blurring everything but your active window. It’s a great way to stay focused on your work especially when you’re working on a project that requires you to focus on a single task at a time.

As you can tell, the app effectively blurs the background of the active window leaving you with a clear view of what you’re working on.

There are two types of blur modes in the app:

  • Deep: Blurs the background of the active window entirely.
  • Ambient: Blurs the background of the active window partially. In other words, there will be a subtle gradient blur.

The app also supports multi-display, and you can set app-specific rules—whether you want to exclude certain apps or keep the blur per screen or global for an app.

The app is paid but in my opinion, it justifies the price tag with all the features it has to offer and it solves a specific problem and it works like a charm. So, I would highly recommend giving it a try.
